The Problem SPC Addresses– Economics 101

Percentage of veterinarians pursuing advanced training is decreasing

Funding (NIH and State Grants) support for advanced training in pathology is decreasing

Military pathology training programs are nearly non-existent

Pathology programs abroad offer little relief as compared to other scientific disciplines

Increased number of pathologists assuming management and research leadership positions decreases ‘bench’ productivity

Certification (ACVP) examination is challenging
and historical success rates are alarmingly low

Challenging demographics - entire generation of our most experienced toxicologic pathologists will be retiring in the near term

Projected 400 vacant positions by 2008 with more than 50% of those in industry

Salaries and job versatility demands continue to escalate as pharma competes with maturing biotechs and merging CROs

Importance of pathology discipline being recognized with increased numbers assuming key management/leadership positions as well as increased involvement in discovery/early development and “omics” technologies

European and Japanese pharma have increased their state-side recruiting efforts

The days of abundant PhD and Pathology
Preceptorships in the Military are over

Younger generation of veterinarians are ignoring graduate degree opportunities, citing time/cost

Salaries and early partnership opportunities for young veterinarians in clinical practice
are increasingly more lucrative
